The Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie (LEIZA), a member of the Leibniz Association, is a globally active archaeological research institute and museum with its headquarters in Mainz and additional branches in Neuwied, Mayen and Schleswig. Since its foundation in 1852, the institute has been dedicated to the study of material remains from more than 3 million years of human history with the aim of understanding the human evolution, human development and the transformation of societies.
For the LEIZA-Department of Prehistory in Mainz we are looking for
a senior researcher (m/f/d)
(EG 13 TV-L), full-time (100 %)
limited for 4 years
Your tasks:
- Organisation, management and execution of excavations and surveys in the United Arab Emirates in cooperation with the Austrian Archaeological Institute and the Antiquities Office of Sharjah (UE)
- Project development with a focus on the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age as well as prehistoric and interdisciplinary archaeology in Southwest Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean as part of the LEIZA research fields
- Research on settlement and landscape archaeology including geoarchaeology
- Research on communication and exchange networks
- Deepening and establishing new collaborations
- Acquisition of third-party funds for the above-mentioned core themes
- Spending longer periods abroad and carrying out logistical organizational work
Your requirements profile:
- Degree with completed doctorate in archaeology
- Expertise in prehistoric and/or Near Eastern archaeology
- Experience abroad in countries of Southwest Asia
- Language skills: English level C1
- Several years of experience in conducting excavations and/or surveys, including mastery of digital documentation methods for complex excavation findings and finds management in accordance with international standards
- Intercultural competence and communication skills
- IT knowledge (GIS, databases, etc.)
- International research network
- Experience in conceptual work, writing excavation reports and research articles common in the field
- Successful acquisition of third-party funding or comparable successes (prizes, awards)
- Class B driving licence
