The seminal compilations of ancient texts concerning Greek and Roman coinage by the late John R. Melville-Jones (1933-2026), Testimonia Numaria (2 vols., 1993 & 2007) and Testimonia Numaria Romana (2023), have left open as desideratum a comprehensive study of the visual representations of coins & money, their production and usage in ancient media, for instance, on (grave) reliefs, mosaics, mosaics, and even coins itself – transforming and transmitting coinage in manifold ways. Covering the whole period from antiquity to modern times, and the depiction of money in different regions of the world (e.g. Europe, Asia, Americas), the session aims at filling this gap by discussing such representations in visual media and contextualizing them in their archaeological, iconographic, and (art-)historical settings.
Special emphasis is placed on the communicative function of these media as focal points of socio-economic and cultural frames and discourses. Papers are welcome that address selected examples, specific time periods, regions, and/or media genres.
Submission deadline is 4 December 2026, with information on paper acceptance being sent out in February 2027.
