CfP for the Aigeiros Conference “A Need for Organisation: Infrastructure, Social Systems and the Division of Space in Ancient Greece”

06.11.2026 - 07.11.2026 Ganztags

ΑΙΓΕΙΡΟΣ. A research conference for young scholars in Athens and beyond.

The German Archaeological Institute at Athens and the network of the PhD candidates are pleased to announce that yet again we have the opportunity to invite young scholars of all archaeological institutions and research facilities in Athens and across Europe to gather in the shadow of the canope of the ΑΙΓΕΙΡΟΣ tree.

The Aigeiros Conference, held at the German Archaeological Institute at Athens, offers PhD candidates a platform to present and discuss their research approaches or (preliminary) results with a critical audience in a safe space. A scientific as well as social exchange are the main objectives of the conference, which is intended to generate new input for all the participants and to build a foundation for future international collaborations in the field of archeology.

Through its history and until present, humanity has been confronted with everchanging circumstances, environmental, war or social unrest. In order to survive, control and at last improve these situations people had to establish systems, many of which yet need to be explored and understood. Therefore, the head theme of the conference will be:

“A Need for Organisation: Infrastructure, Social Systems and the Division of Space in Ancient Greece”
Scheduled for the 06.–07.11.2026

In order to encourage a diverse and international assembly of speakers and participants the conference will be held solely in English. The speakers are asked to limit the duration of their presentation to a maximum of 20 minutes followed by a brief discussion.

Prospective speakers are kindly asked to provide a title and an abstract (in English, 200-400 words) along with their contact details and a short CV to aigeiros@dainst.de no later than the 17th of July 2026.

We will review the proposals and get back to the applicants as quickly as possible! If a lack of funding would prevent you from participating, please contact us. We will try to provide partial support for travel expenses.

People wishing to attend the conference without presenting may please also send a short e-mail giving information about name, institution and discipline.

Sincerely,
The Aigeiros-Team
